 The book has been designed in accordance with the revised syllabus effective from session 2013-14 with extra-ordinary endeavour and assiduous attention to fulfill the needs of Bangladeshi students. At present, the standard of English is getting degraded rapidly in Bangladesh. To survive here, English literature specially English classics must be introduced to students. The aim of this book is to increase greater knowledge of the fets of literary criticism that will enable the students to formulate and increase their own comprehension as well as critical thinking capacity. The discussion on each text is self sufficient so that the students are interested in reading the whole text. In this way, the discussion on each text may be used as a mini-reference book. The classics included in this course are Aristotle's 'Poetics', Sidney's 'An Apology for Poetry', Dr. S. Johnson's 'Preface to Shakespeare', Wordsworth's 'Preface to Lyrical Ballads', and Coleridge's 'Biographia Literaria' each of which are epoch making document.

In 'Poetics', Aristotle has discussed the method of tragedy, plot, epic manner, dramatic unity, imitation, hamartia, characteristics of the tragic characters, superiority of the poet and poetry over philosophy, theory of catharsis, nature of comedy etc. For him the poet imitates the reality and he transforms it into something new and higher.
